David's Review of Shatterpoint

5/5 Rancors - Read Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. By all means watch Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now. However, most of all for you Clone Wars fans, read Shatterpoint by Matthew Stover. This excellent book shows Mace Windu utilizing all of his Jedi Master powers as he tries to rescue Depa Billaba - his former Padawan and fellow Council member. Depa has been sent to Mace's home planet of Haruun Kal to train the local tribesmen as a guerilla resistance force. Her presence there changes her significantly and apparently leads her to command the guerilla forces in a bloody campaign in the jungles. The sacred nature of life has disappeared, and Depa's Jedi education seems to have been overwhelmed by mysterious forces in this strange jungle world.

Mace first realizes that Depa is in serious trouble when he and Yoda listen to a transcript of a communication from her deep in the jungles of Haruun Kal.

I use the night and the night uses me.

I have become the darkness in the jungle.

I know you will come for me, Mace. You should never have sent me here. And I should never have come. But what's done can never be undone. I know you think I've gone mad. I haven't.

What's happened to me is worse.
I've gone sane.

That's why you'll come, Mace. That's why you'll have to.

Because nothing is more dangerous than a Jedi who's finally sane.

Those words are impossible to resist whether you are a Jedi Master like Mace Windu or a Clone Wars reader like the rest of us. Read the book. Meet Kar Vastor, the mythical, almost all-powerful leader of the Korunnai people. Read about seemingly impossible new creatures. Agonize with Mace as he tries to deal with the things happening on the mysterious planet and makes incredible use of the Force.

Experience the horror, the horror.
