4/5 Rancors - James Luceno weaves a short, punchy story in Darth Maul: Saboteur, originally published in e-book format but now included in the paperback edition of Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter. Saboteur sets up the events that kick off Luceno's novel Cloak of Deception, explaining why the Dorvallan companies chose to contract with the Trade Federation and who drove that decision (three guesses!) With this short story added to the mix, we have what appears to be a completed picture of Maul's missions before his defeat at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Luceno's descriptive powers paint an evocative picture of the stifling lommite mines. Maul is not quite as self-sure as he is on his other missions, revising his potential strategy several times as he determines the best course of action. This story fills out why Sidious tapped the Trade Federation for his primary stooges and how the bumbling Nute Gunray came into his lofty position at the top of the organization.
Saboteur makes a nice accent piece to the other pre-The Phantom Menace stories and is worth tracking down.
