Complete Star Wars Novel and Review Index

Links to our reviews last updated June 7, 2013.

This is the full list of the books and e-books we're reading, sorted by in-universe chronology. The Expanded Universe sets all dates as relative to the Battle of Yavin, which is the pivotal battle in which Luke Skywalker and friends destroy the Death Star in the original movie. This list shows dates as Before Battle of Yavin (BBY) and After Battle of Yavin (ABY).

When we started the Rancors Love to Read program on May 25, 2006, we had a list of 96 books that were currently available. The original intent was to stick to that list the whole way, since new books are constantly being published that may or may not fit where we are in the overall chronology. However, we've ended up reading new books as they are published (with the exception of the new books at the far end of the timeline: we'll read those in their natural order when we get there).

This list mirrors the sequence and dating presented in the official Del Rey timeline at the front of most Star Wars novels.

    this blog is great.

a thought: you should provide a list of your highest-rated books or a list that's sortable by rating.

also: chronologically, i haven't read anything beyond zahn's original thrawn trilogy. it would be helpful to know which books that take place after that are the best to read and the most necessary to keep up with the plot. i imagine there are some books in the later part of the series that aren't very good and don't add any new information, so if possible i'd like to skip those.

Thanks Kevin! I know for my part I have struggled to find time for reading SW and writing reviews lately (reading too many other things), but it is encouraging knowing folks are enjoying the blog!

Originally I had planned to do a breakdown of all the highest rated along with the middling and the low when we finished the project, but that is still a ways off, so maybe it would be good to do something sooner.

Offhand, the key books set after the Thrawn trilogy would be the Jedi Academy trilogy (not nearly as well written but many important elements are introduced) and probably Zahn's later duo logy about the Hand of Thrawn. Everything takes a radically different turn with the New Jedi Order - you could try Vector Prime and if you enjoy it, you might want to dig into that series.

Kevin - Thanks very much for the compliment. I also like the idea of a sortable list. I keep track of the Star Wars books I have read in an Excel spreadsheet, so I can go back and look at my ratings if I need to. I see that Andrew has offered some advice about which books to read after the Thrawn trilogy so I won't add anything to that. However, I did notice recently that Del Ray is issuing a 20th anniversary edition of Heir to the Empire next June. It will include annotations on the text plus a new short story about Grand Admiral Thrawn. Could be good.

Great blog, I hope you post new reviews!

Thank you. We are behind in posting new reviews, but we have not stopped. There are just too many books to read. Plus, I have to admit that some (all?) of the books I have been reading recently are not Star Wars. We'll get back to it.

Great blog guys. I was genuinely surprised at how much I agree with your reviews. For some reason I always thought I was missing something with the NJO.
One question though, why the Corran Horn hate? He is my favorite character in all EU.
Keep posting, I would love to know what you think of some of the post-NJO books.

    Andrew said...

Thanks! Blame any Corran hate on lack of clarity in our reviews: I think he may be a bit overutilized in some stories and might nitpick some characterization, but I certainly like him overall well enough.

We will keep posting: hopefully you'll hang in with what has become a slower pace than we originally intended. :-) Too many books, too little time....
